ASP037: American Prison System | Prison: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

Overview:

I spent some time at court yesterday for my brother and was told by his public defender that by being there and wanting him to get treatment, I’m hurting my brother.  No joke, that’s what he said!  He gave me quite an education on how the Maricopa County system works.  I’ve been replaying the whole conversation in my head.  This morning when I was reviewing it with my business mastermind group, they showed me John Oliver’s show that he did on the American prison system.  I thought I’d share it with you.

Watch the full episode here!

What do you think?  Do you care about the state of the American prison system?  Do you think it’s fair?  Or is it easy to just not think about it?

I get really upset when I think of how we spend so much money on putting people in jail and keeping them coming back.

Based on results, Arizona cares a lot more about destroying families and communities than they do about building them up!  It’s very difficult to get money for schools.  Arizona schools are among the worst in the nation.

We don’t want to rehabilitate our prisoners.  We want people to continue to come back.  Recidivism is good for business.  Am I the only one who is angry about this?

The good news is, it looks like Governor Ducey is taking steps to change things.  We shall see.
